What Really Happens at a Dog Bath and Brush Out

A lot of dog owners drop off their pup and wonder what actually goes on back there. Fair question. A bath and brush out is more than soap and water. It's a head-to-tail process that takes time and attention to do right. Here's what the appointment looks like from start to finish.

The Pre-Bath Check

Before your dog gets wet, a groomer does a quick once-over. This means running hands through the coat to find any mats or tangles. Mats need to come out before bathing because water makes them tighter and harder to remove.

The groomer also looks for anything unusual, like skin irritation, lumps, or parasites. If something turns up, you'll hear about it before the appointment wraps up. That early check saves a lot of trouble later.

The Bath Itself

Your dog gets a thorough rinse first to wet the coat all the way down to the skin. Then the groomer works in shampoo, paying attention to the neck, paws, belly, and tail base. Those spots collect the most dirt and oil.

Choosing the right pet shampoo and conditioner matters here. The product needs to match your dog's coat type and skin condition. A dog with dry, flaky skin gets a different formula than a dog with a thick double coat. After shampooing, a conditioner goes on to soften the coat and make brushing easier.

Everything gets rinsed out completely. Leftover product residue irritates the skin, so the rinse takes as long as it takes.

Drying the Coat

A wet dog doesn't just air dry on the table. A hand dryer is used to blow the coat out while the groomer brushes through it. This combination does two things: it dries the coat faster, and it starts separating the fur before the main brush out begins.

For heavy coats, this step takes a while. A Bernese Mountain Dog or a Husky holds a lot of water. Patience here means less work during the brush out and a better finished coat.

The Brush Out

Once the coat is fully dry, the real brush out starts. The groomer works in sections, usually starting at the rear and working forward. Each section gets brushed down to the skin. Surface brushing looks fine but leaves hidden tangles underneath.

A good brush out removes loose undercoat, dead hair, and any remaining tangles. For heavy shedders, this is where a deshedding treatment makes a big difference. Specialized tools pull out the undercoat that regular brushing misses. Dogs that shed heavily benefit from this a few times a year, especially heading into summer.

At the end, the coat should lie flat, feel soft, and move freely. No clumps, no mats.

The Finishing Details

A bath and brush out appointment often includes a few extras beyond the coat. nail trim, ear cleaning, and anal gland expression are common add-ons that most groomers handle at the same visit.

Nails get filed or clipped down. Ears get wiped out with a gentle cleaner to remove wax and debris. These small things matter. Overgrown nails change how a dog walks. Dirty ears can lead to infections.

Some owners also add teeth brushing at this point. It's not a substitute for veterinary dental care, but regular brushing slows plaque buildup between vet visits.

How Long It Takes

A bath and brush out runs anywhere from one hour to two and a half hours depending on the dog's size, coat type, and how long it's been since the last grooming. A small, short-coated dog moves through quickly. A large, double-coated dog needs more time.

If your dog is anxious or new to grooming, the process takes longer too. Groomers work at the dog's pace. Rushing a nervous dog makes the next appointment harder. In Chicago, where schedules are tight, it's worth calling ahead to get a realistic time estimate for your specific dog before you plan your day around it.

If you're not sure whether a bath and brush out is the right service for your dog, just ask before you book. A good groomer will look at your dog's coat and tell you exactly what it needs. At All 4 Dirty Paws, that conversation happens before any appointment gets scheduled.
